Pioneer Red Legacy - Central Otago

Nestled against a rugged rock face in Central Otago, this lifestyle shed is far more than a storage space—it’s a living tribute to family legacy and New Zealand craftsmanship. Clad in striking COLORSTEEL® Pioneer Red, every detail carries meaning. The bold colour choice honours the owner’s late father and the red-painted furniture store he once ran in Dunedin. Inside, a framed photograph of that store hangs beside an image of a childhood shed, grounding the new build in memory and heritage.

But this story runs deeper. The owner, who founded OCTA in 1973, was directly involved in one of NZ Steel’s earliest major industrial projects: the Glenbrook Coil Coating Plant, where the very first steel coil produced was Pioneer Red. Decades later, the same colour now clads his own family shed, symbolising a full-circle moment in both professional and personal legacy.

Thoughtfully designed for both practicality and sentiment, the shed blends heritage with innovation. A restored pedal car once ridden by the owner now sits ready for his grandchildren, while the shed itself has become a cherished space for family gatherings and celebrations. A negative-detail window frames the natural rock face like artwork, while Dridex cladding provides a sleek, moisture-resistant finish to protect classic cars, antiques, and heirlooms within. Inside, blonde ply laid in a brick pattern adds warmth and modern character.

Despite Central Otago’s temperature extremes, the insulated structure maintains an impressive internal climate, within just 3 °C of the outside temperature at the height of summer.

Outside, more than 10,000 daffodils have been planted to bloom in a vibrant sea of yellow against the striking Pioneer Red façadel.

Recognised for its craftsmanship and storytelling, this project was proudly named a Finalist in the 2024 COLORSTEEL® Awards - a fitting honour for a shed that embodies heart, history, and innovation.
